Read Bangladesh’s National Anthem
Written by Rabindranath Tagore in Bangla in 1906, this song, “My Beautiful Bengal”, was played on the eve of Bangladesh’s War for Independence and then adopted as the national anthem of Bangladesh during the War.
My golden Bengal, I love you!
Your skies and your breeze set my heart playing as if it were a flute.
In Spring, dear Mother, the fragrance from your mango-groves
makes me wild with joy.
In Autumn, Mother, in the ripened rice fields,
All that I see makes me smile.
Oh, what beauty, what shades of color, what warmth and what compassion!
What peace you have spread at the feet of
Banyan trees and along the banks of rivers!
Oh my Mother, your words are like
Nectar to my ears!
What true pleasure!
If sadness, dear Mother, casts a gloom on your face
My eyes are filled with tears.
