These young people received 1 year of training before heading back up to "the hills"- remote areas of the country often quite far away from any medical professional. They take care of simple ailments. Unfortunately, they are often left to helplessly stand by as children (or adults) die of treatable conditons for lack of finances or proximity to higher level care. They come back to our hospital periodically for supplies and refresher training. One doctor completed an hour Q and A with them on pediatric problems. The hardest question was on a child with what sounds like meningitis. The family is very poor and cannot even afford the trip to bring the child to the hospital. In all likelihood, she has already died based on what has been heard. Oh, for unlimited resources!
