“We’re here to show love,” Jewel Nath, supervisor of Light of Learning literacy programs, explains. “We’re supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves, and this is a great way to do it!”
AOB’s non-formal educational centers are designed for disadvantaged children and adults who cannot attend traditional schools. The simple, flexible style of these centers enables teachers to tutor students at desks in church buildings, on the floor of a home veranda or in a community center. Wherever classes are held, students eagerly come to learn reading, writing, and mathematics. 15 teachers are presently teaching 365 students in 14 centers in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar districts.
Though community leaders may initially express concern over church members helping their villages, love triumphs. Hope-filled, confident students graduate. The centers have a great reputation for helping communities develop.
